Picking the Perfect Polish

We have all been there, staring into the sea of nail polish colors hanging on the wall. The chemical free Zoya nail polish has a wide array of colors and shades for every skin type. But what colors are the best for you? Depending on the time of year, you may have to choose a few to determine which one looks the best. However, usually ESSpa’s nail technicians follow this kind of procedure for picking the right polish.

There are a lot of factors in choosing the best color. For manicures, we usually suggest a French manicure or natural hue like soft pink, sheer white or even light beige. Unless you have a darker skin tone and can pull off rich dark colors (black, brown, bronze, and red) in the fall and winter seasons. For Pedicures, you have much more lea way to experiment with different shades. If you have a fair skin tone, stick with lighter shades so they don’t wash you out. Ladies with darker skin tones can pull off pretty much any color they would like. Except keep in mind, you don’t want to choose too much sparkle and glitter shades if you aren’t used to it. If you have any imperfections in your nail beds, choose a color that is a creamy instead of frosted because they can sometimes accentuate the imperfection.

Try to stay away from yellow and light green because it won’t look good on anyone. It will almost look like fungus among us! Yikes!

But hey, it’s your nails, so have fun with it, your kids might love your crazy colors, or you may want to play around with nail art and neon colors for your vacation. It’s your nails, and you have to love it. But professionally speaking, stick with our tips, and it will sure look great!
P.S. – Always keep up with your manicures and pedicures all year round. People might not see your toes in those snow boots but regular pedicures and manicures can help prevent ingrown nails, calluses, excessive cuticle growth, and dry skin which may cause a problem if left untreated.

The Blueberry: #1 Antioxidant

Ok, so to clear up any misconceptions, an antioxidant helps neutralize harmful by products called free radicals that may lead to cancer and other age related diseases. Antioxidant molecules battle cell and DNA damage in cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and brain degeneration. The actual pigment that makes blueberries their blue color is named Anthocyanin and it is responsible for all of the berry’s wonderful properties.

The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) developed an ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity) test to determine where fruits are in terms of the percentage of antioxidants they provide. Fresh blueberries have about 2400 per 100 grams. That ranks them above cranberries, strawberries, plums, and oranges believe it or not. The next antioxidant fruit in line would be Concord grape juice. So eat them up ESSpa guests, it’s the best thing you can do for yourself during a meal.

You can also find the same great blueberry properties for your skin by using the blueberry soy masque from eminence.

Aromatherapy Everyday

At ESSpa Kozmetika, we have realized the importance of aroma therapy. Different scents and smells have a huge impact on the way you remember things from your past as well as changes in your mood and behavior. Lemon can refresh you, cinnamon can comfort you, and peppermint can energize your spirits. It also provides relief to people with breathing and sinus problems as well as kill any odor causing bacteria’s in the air that we breathe. That is why we have installed an instant aromatherapy machine to our common area. It uses no heat or chemicals. All it uses is pure water and essential oils. It also changes its LED lighting to provide a soothing and relaxing atmosphere. The trick is what kind of essential oil are you in the mood for? You have many choices but here are the most popular essential oils for aromatherapy:

Peppermint
Lavender
Eucalyptus

Organic Spa Recipe:Scallop Seviche in Cucumber Cups

When you arrive at a destination spa, you would typically go to their café in between services to try a number of their organic, fresh and healthy meals. We offer you the same amazing experience at ESSpa with our partnership with Luma restaurant. Here, we have provided a fresh and healthy recipe sure to show up on any spa menu that you can use at home.
Ingredients:
• 6 ounces of organic sea scallops, cut into pieces
• 1 tomato, peeled and seeded, cut into pieces
• 1 teaspoon minced chives
• 1 tablespoon chopped cilantro leaves
• 1/2 jalapeno, minced
• 1/4 green pepper, cut into pieces
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 5 drops hot pepper sauce
• 1 to 2 limes, juiced
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt
• Freshly ground black pepper
• 3 cucumbers sliced 1/2-inch thick (30 slices total)
• Sour cream, as needed
• 2 teaspoons cilantro leaves

Directions:
Combine the scallops, tomatoes, herbs, peppers, olive oil, and hot sauce. Add enough lime juice to cover the scallops. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Marinate, covered, in the refrigerator at least 1 hour and up to 8 hours, stirring occasionally.
Trim the cucumber slices with a round, fluted cutter to remove the rind. Scoop a pocket out of the middle of the cucumber slices. Do not cut all the way through the slice. Fill the cucumber cups with the seviche. Garnish each seviche cup with a small dot of sour cream and a cilantro leaf.

Make-up Tip for the Day

Ok, so since it is winter time, you still want that natural sun kissed glow right? Well, whatever you do, do not step into that tanning bed. We just told you to protect your skin with an SPF but if you want to have a healthy glow, just use a bronzer. A bronzing powder should be used all over where the natural sun would hit your facial features. For example, apply bronzer on your nose, cheekbones, and brow bones.
It is best to avoid a bronzer that is orange toned or frosted because they won’t look natural. Many make-up companies offer a light, medium, and dark bronzer, so choose a couple according to the season and tint of your skin. Use the lighter one in the winter and a darker one in the summer.
When applying bronzer, use a short and fluffy brush. Lightly sweep on nose, cheekbones, brow bones, forehead, and a little on the neck to avoid that jaw bone make-up line. If you have dry and smooth skin, you could use a bronzing stick or cream. If you have oily skin, try not to use a bronzer because sometimes the bronzer may look like an unpleasant shade of orange. If you like a pop of color, you can just use a little pink blush on the apples of your cheeks. Good luck with finding your favorite hue and remember that less is always better when applying bronzers.

Skincare Tip for the Day

Yes, ladies and gents, it is winter time but that doesn’t mean that the sun can’t give off damaging sun rays. It is always important to wear a sunscreen everyday with at least 15 SPF. SPF stands for sun protection factor and it can have fabulous results. Maybe not today or tomorrow but down the road you will look younger because your skin won’t be as damaged as those sun bathers. The sun’s rays can give you wrinkles, dark spots, dry patches, and even skin cancer if you are exposed enough. It is best if you can find a moisturizer with a SPF already in it. That way, it is an easy way to incorporate it into your daily routine.

Listen up you snow bunnies out there because you are the most exposed during the winter, even if it is -10 below. While you are on the ski slopes, go for a higher SPF sunscreen. Why you ask? Well, the sun will reflect off of the white snow and increase the possibility of sun burn damage on your skin. So don’t be stingy with the SPF. If you have any questions about SPF or skin damage, visit www.esspa.net, call us at (412) 782-3888 or contact a dermatologist or esthetician near you to determine a game plan for getting your skin back to a healthy state.
