Oil of the Month: Shea Butter

Ok…ok…we know that shea butter is not usually considered skincare oil. However, it does give properties that some other skincare oils do have. Shea butter is a natural fat that comes from the nut of the shea tree. The nuts are picked, crushed, and boiled and left behind is a silky moisturizer and skincare emollient. This edible moisturizer comes from West Africa and it sometimes can be used as cooking oil. Shea butter is widely used as a skincare emollient and you would be surprised to know that it is also used in some chocolate as a substitute for cocoa butter.

Shea butter is a natural anti-inflammatory agent and can be used on rashes, blemishes, burns, eczema, and scars to help fade away those conditions. It is great for lightening sun spots, decreasing stretch marks, and lessening the signs of wrinkles. It also can be used as a fabulous over night hair conditioner. Shea butter, believe it or not, is a natural SPF. It can range up to a scale of 6 SPF! Shea butter is a great moisturizer during these winter moths because it won’t be absorbed as quickly as some other lotions can. Shea is also a sexy little secret when it comes to getting that perfect shine on your legs in the summer time.
